FAQs

Speech and language therapy is concerned with the management of disorders of speech, language, communication and swallowing in children and adults. Speech-language therapists work with individuals with:

  • learning difficulties
  • physical disabilities
  • speech / language delay (lambat bercakap)
  • specific language impairment
  • unclear speech (pelat)
  • hearing impairment
  • cleft palate
  • stammering
  • autism/social interaction difficulties
  • voice disorders
  • echolalia / parrot talk

An assessment session is carried out to determine the existence and type of the communication problem, identify the language level and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the individual’s speech and language skills. The speech-language therapist will also take a history from you to obtain specific information regarding your concerns.

An individualized program will be planned to help improve the individual’s speech and language skills. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to join in the therapy sessions in order to carry over the therapy objectives at home.

At the end of a therapy session, the speech-language therapist will brief about the individual’s performance during the session. In addition, parents or caregivers will be informed of what to practice at home with the individual.
